An LIS manages laboratory work: orders, samples, instrument results and lab reports. An HIS manages the wider hospital: registration, billing, wards and clinical records. Integration passes orders and results between them and the analyzers.

The analyzer sends its result over a protocol such as HL7, ASTM or RS-232. An interface layer reads the message, maps test codes to your LIS, and posts the result to the right patient and order. Engineers test it with sample runs before go-live.
